A new survey suggests that the traditional formula of dinner and drinks may no longer be enough to spark meaningful connections. According to research by Virgin that surveyed more than 1,000 Americans, interest in so-called “adrenaline dating” – outings centered around high-energy activities – is on the rise, with 93% of respondents open to the idea.
The findings point to a growing appetite for dates that incorporate action and adventure, such as amusement parks (55%), ziplining (39%), and go-kart racing (35%). For younger daters, the trend skews even more extreme: 42% of Gen Z participants named skydiving as the activity most likely to build a strong connection with a partner. Whether they meet online or offline, more and more singles are looking for in-person date options that get their blood pumping.
The survey also underscored widespread frustrations with the dating status quo. Nearly half of singles (48%) said they are tired of “playing games,” while 95% reported experiencing at least one bad date, with awkward conversation cited as the most common reason.
“Adrenaline Dating is a fabulous way to create more excitement and invigorate people in the dating process,” said Dr. Susan Trotter of Fresh Starts Registry. “Research suggests that it can enhance the connection between people because of the adrenaline rush that then gets associated with the other person.”
With more than four in five respondents agreeing that adrenaline dates could accelerate a relationship, the results susuggest a possible gap in the market that’s yet to be fully explored. Dating apps and matchmaking services that incorporate activity-based matchmaking, intense local experiences, or event tie-ins may resonate with users seeking alternatives to routine coffee or dinner outings.
