Dating apps are responding to growing fatigue among users by integrating wellness into their methodology – and leading the charge is French app happn, which will host its first physical event in Europe: Single Run, a 5 km jog through Amsterdam’s Vondelpark on August 12. Designed to foster meaningful connections while emphasizing fitness and face-to-face encounters, this event is part of happn’s Disconnect to Reconnect campaign.
Rather than swiping, participants will jog in a casual group setting, set to music from a DJ on wheels, followed by drinks at a nearby spot. The intention is not only wellness but organic social engagement; running together allows people to meet based on shared values and active lifestyles. The strategy flips the traditional online dating playbook by replacing chat-based matches with high-energy, real-world interaction.
This approach reflects a broader industry trend: dating platforms from Hinge to Tinder are launching offline experiences like hikes, sports leagues, and social runs to counteract swiping burnout and encourage authenticity. Many younger users now associate wellness – not just romance – with ideal connection experiences, especially given that physically fitness and mental health are now equally valuable for the average dating app user.
While happn is only the most recent example of these offline campaigns, it’s also unlikely to be the least. Niche dating platforms as a whole have been gaining ground since at least midway through 2024, with many of these apps offering a wellness experience – either directly or indirectly – by allowing users to focus on specific interests or communities.
