A currently-privately-released survey from extramarital dating platform Gleeden reveals a rising trend among users over 40 – particularly those who are single, divorced, or widowed—who are turning to the app in search of emotionally safe, platonic relationships rather than romance. The findings suggest that more mature users are redefining connection by prioritizing companionship, healing, and communication over physical intimacy.
Among Gen X users aged 45–60, 54% reported frequently thinking about forming non-romantic connections. Many, the data shows, do not seek affairs but rather emotional clarity: 51% feel their current relationships lack emotional depth, 44% say they need better communication, and 42% want excitement or personal growth. Gleeden positions these changing priorities as part of a broader shift toward intentional, emotionally-driven connections.
Sybil Shiddell, Country Manager for Gleeden India, explained that for many users in their 40s, friendship—supported by trust, emotional safety, and maturity—is becoming the new focal point. She noted that users are no longer seeking validation through romance: they seek companionship that supports well-being without the societal pressures associated with traditional romantic labels.
This evolution in platform usage aligns with broader research on dating app behavior. A separate Gleeden survey we reported on earlier this year found that over 66% of Indian female users cited emotional companionship – not physical relationships – as their main motivation for joining. Many users maintain ongoing non-romantic chats, highlighting how the platform is increasingly used for emotional connection over transactional intimacy.
The trend reflects a changing context for online connection: newer generations and older users alike are leveraging technology not just to forge romantic bonds, but to fill emotional voids with meaningful friendships. While Gleeden’s main focus is on being an extramatial dating app, it seems clear that many users are treating it for more general connection purposes regardless.
