A new survey conducted by OkCupid reveals a shift in dating behaviors among younger singles in 2025, emphasizing purposeful connections over casual encounters. The survey, which involved over 1,200 respondents, largely from Gen Z and Millennial age groups, suggests that the majority of singles today are adopting a slower, more deliberate approach to finding relationships – something that other similar surveys and trend reports have also identified.
Despite ongoing discussions about meeting partners offline, dating apps remain the dominant method of connection. According to OkCupid’s data, 57% of respondents primarily meet potential partners through apps, with only 11% finding matches via in-person interactions. A combined 38% report using both online and offline channels.
“Intentional dating” appears to be more than a catchphrase. The findings indicate that 71% of surveyed singles are seeking meaningful relationships, with many preferring to proceed cautiously to protect their emotional energy. Additionally, 40% of daters are choosing to focus on one person at a time, prioritizing quality over quantity in their interactions.
What guides these dating choices? Personal values and long-term life goals rank as the most significant factors for 61% of respondents, overshadowing the influence of social media or peer advice. Past relationship experiences also play a role, cited by 34% of participants.
While defining the relationship remains important, singles are pacing these conversations. Around 31% prefer a gradual approach, waiting to see how connections evolve, while 28% are comfortable labeling relationships when it feels appropriate.
The survey also highlights how digital research is common prior to first dates: 57% admit to reviewing a potential partner’s social media. Furthermore, while sexual compatibility is seen as highly important by 79% of respondents, many prefer to let such discussions emerge naturally.
