Meta’s Threads has reached a new milestone, surpassing 400 million monthly active users just two years after its launch as a rival to X (formerly Twitter). Instagram head Adam Mosseri confirmed the figure on Tuesday, noting that the platform added 50 million MAUs in the past quarter alone.
The growth trajectory follows Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s April update that Threads had crossed 350 million monthly users. X remains larger overall, with over 600 million MAUs, but Threads is rapidly narrowing the gap in mobile engagement.
Data from Similarweb shows that in June 2025, Threads’ iOS and Android apps recorded 115.1 million daily active users — up 127.8% year over year. In contrast, X saw 132 million daily mobile users during the same month, reflecting a more modest 15.2% annual decline.
While Threads is closing in on X’s mobile audience, it still trails significantly in web traffic. Similarweb reported that in June, X averaged 145.8 million daily web visits globally, compared to just 6.9 million for Threads.
The platform’s expansion has been supported by a steady rollout of features over the past year, including direct messaging, integration with the fediverse, customizable feeds, and AI-powered tools. Mosseri described Threads’ evolution as moving from a “zany idea to compete with Twitter” into “a meaningful platform that fosters the open exchange of perspectives.”
With its accelerating user growth and feature development, Threads is positioning itself as a serious long-term competitor in the text-based social media space — particularly as X faces ongoing declines in mobile usage.
