X Expands AI With Free Trial of Grok Text-to-Video Tool, Male AI Companion

X is ramping up efforts to drive adoption of its Grok AI features, launching a limited-time free trial of its new “Imagine” text-to-video generator in the U.S. The tool, introduced last week to X Premium and Grok subscribers, allows users to create short videos from text prompts. Musk has been actively promoting the feature, sharing Grok-generated clips on the platform.

xAI, the company behind Grok, describes Imagine as the “fastest and most fun” video generator available. Musk has also teased a dedicated in-app feed to showcase standout creations, framing the initiative as a modern, AI-powered echo of Vine. While Vine itself isn’t returning, the feed will focus on highlighting user-generated Grok videos.

In addition to text-to-video, X has rolled out a “Make video with Grok” option for still images, enabling users to animate photos directly within the app. Similar image-to-video tools are under development or already available from competitors such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, but X’s integration could encourage more experimentation by making the feature readily accessible in-stream.

The company is also working to extend Grok Imagine to the web and is exploring new AI-powered creative tools, including a simplified game creation engine. Recent updates include enhanced PDF handling for Grok 4, which now supports files hundreds of pages long with improved content recognition.

Alongside these releases, xAI has launched “Valentine,” a male AI companion app. While some tools are available to free users, most features remain part of paid subscription tiers, underscoring X’s strategy to grow recurring revenue from AI products. Whether text-to-video generation will drive significant user engagement – and subscription growth – remains to be seen.
