Instagram’s long-anticipated “Edits” app, a dedicated video creation tool similar to CapCut, is expected to launch within the next few weeks, according to Instagram chief Adam Mosseri. While originally slated for a March release, the app is still undergoing beta testing with select creators, and a simplified version is set to roll out soon.
Addressing speculation about potential costs, Mosseri confirmed that Edits will be free to use, though certain advanced AI-powered features may require payment in the future.
“[Edits] will be free. I think over time, we might have some paid features where we’re going to need to cover costs of things, like compute for big AI features. But in general, we want to create as many features that are free as possible, because the more people can create, the more they will create, the better Instagram will be, and the more we will all benefit,” Mosseri explained.
Instagram has already previewed some of the app’s AI-driven tools, including AI-generated backgrounds and animated still images. These advanced features will likely be housed within Edits rather than the main Instagram app, reinforcing its role as a standalone content creation platform.
The move signals Meta’s deeper investment in AI-enhanced content creation, potentially competing with existing platforms that offer video editing, effects, and transitions. While basic tools will remain free, more sophisticated AI capabilities could become paid add-ons.
With the popularity of short-form video continuing to rise, Edits is likely to attract significant interest from content creators looking for seamless integration with Instagram. The official release is expected very soon.
