A newly shared survey from India’s QuackQuack, polling 7,635 users aged 18–35, reveals emerging dating behaviors that depart from traditional profile norms. Dubbed the age of “complicated but emotionally intelligent dating,” these evolving trends highlight how Gen Z is reimagining digital courtship.
Foremost among the findings is the rise of “nostalgia bait”. Nearly one in five users employ grainy, early-2000s-style images or Y2K aesthetics in their profiles – tactics shown to instantly spark familiarity and act as organic icebreakers, especially among Gen Z. Shared cultural memories, even from eras they didn’t personally experience, create emotional bridges between matches. This pattern aligns with broader societal trends, where nostalgic styles are reshaped by younger audiences to create an aesthetic that they personally connect to.
Another shift is the adoption of “anti-bios” – profiles centered on self-deprecating humor and raw honesty. Over one-third of respondents say that ironic, candid self-roasting boosts feelings of connection by displaying vulnerability instead of curated perfection. Fans of this approach view it as a counter to endless positivity and filtered self-presentation. This goes with the concept of“underselling”, with nearly half of younger users intentionally downplaying their achievements to attract partners who appreciate authenticity over bragging.
Finally, nearly half of users research potential matches’ social and professional profiles before initiating conversations. While part of this is cautious due diligence to make sure that their matches aren’t a potential risk, it also means that users are paying more attnetion to the individual details on others’ profiles. Not only is this to make sure that their values line up, but also to screen each match for compatabiltiy right off the bat – meaning that users may be matching less often, but focusing on matches that are more likely to succeed.
Altogether, these insights offer a compelling outlook for dating platforms: Gen Z seeks deeper, emotionally minded connections, and is willing to take a new approach to dating to make those connections possible.
