Instagram is rolling out new features aimed at improving the direct messaging (DM) experience, as the platform continues to respond to shifting user behavior and needs. With private messaging now dominating how users share content – and more content being shared privately than publicly – enhancing these features is a logical step in keeping users active and connected within the app.
One of the key updates is the introduction of voice message transcriptions. Users can now view text versions of audio clips directly within the chat, thanks to a new “View transcription” option. According to Instagram, the feature allows users to “view a transcription of the audio before, during, and after you play the voice message,” which could make private conversations more accessible in situations where listening isn’t possible.
In tandem with this, Instagram is also increasing the length limit for voice messages. Previously capped at one minute, audio clips can now run up to five minutes, offering users more flexibility for longer voice exchanges—whether for storytelling, updates, or even music recommendations.
Another notable addition is a “Follow All” button within group chats. This new shortcut allows users to quickly follow every member in a conversation, streamlining connections within larger group discussions. While many group chats already consist of known contacts, the feature could prove useful in broader community or interest-based conversations where not everyone is initially connected.
