Sniffies App Pulled from Apple’s App Store Over Content Restrictions

Sniffies, the queer cruising platform known for its map-based interface and explicit content, has been temporarily removed from Apple’s App Store due to content policy concerns. The app, which launched on iOS in March after years as a browser-only platform, is no longer available for download, though existing users can continue to access it.

Sniffies confirmed the removal, stating that “ongoing content restrictions” were behind the decision. “Due to ongoing content restrictions, the app has been temporarily removed from the App Store,” the company said in a statement. “For users who already have the app installed, it will continue to function normally. Our core web app remains fully operational and continues to offer the unfiltered Sniffies experience.”

The platform differs from more mainstream queer dating apps like Grindr by focusing specifically on cruising culture. Sniffies uses real-time location data to connect users and highlight popular gathering spots, and its allowance for explicit profile pictures sets it apart from other platforms that must adhere to stricter moderation guidelines.

The removal reflects a recurring tension between adult-focused dating platforms and app store policies, which often place limits on sexual content, even for apps intended for adult audiences. Sniffies had previously emphasized that its move to iOS would not compromise its identity. “We knew we needed to meet users where they are without alienating the people who love Sniffies for being different,” said Eli Martin, the company’s chief marketing officer, at launch.
