Snapchat Brings Messaging to Apple Watch with New Companion App

Snapchat has launched a dedicated app for Apple Watch, giving users a new way to stay connected with their conversations directly from their wrist. The app allows wearers to view and respond to incoming messages through a simplified interface optimized for wearable use. Like the recent release of the WhatsApp iPad app, the watch app is entirely meant for messaging – at least for now – but it offers a level of immediacy that could appeal to Snapchat’s more communication-focused users.

With the new integration, Apple Watch users can now preview messages and reply using tools like the keyboard, Scribble, dictation, or by sending emojis. Snapchat describes the app as a tool for quick, situational responses. Whether you’re out for a run or meeting a friend, it allows users to stay engaged in chats without needing to reach for their phone. However, the Apple Watch must remain within Bluetooth range of the connected iPhone for the app to function.

The move extends Snapchat’s broader push to be accessible across more platforms. Snap says the watch app builds on its efforts to support use across tablets and the web, offering continuity for users who want to stay in touch regardless of device.

While it’s unclear how much traction the new Apple Watch integration will gain – especially given that Apple Watch ownership is only a small subset of Snapchat’s 900 million monthly users—it marks a continuation of the company’s strategy to deepen daily engagement.

With around 100 million Apple Watch users globally, the feature may not transform how people use the app, but it reflects Snap’s commitment to keeping conversations flowing across all digital environments, including wearables. The app is available right on the App Store via the same download as the base app, automatically selecting the Apple Watch version as needed – meaning that it shouldn’t have any compatability issues with the base version’s messages.
