Threads Introduces Topic Tags, Reply Controls, and Video Enhancements

Meta has rolled out a series of updates for Threads, its competitor to X, aimed at improving user engagement and content discovery. The latest features include topic tags for profiles, enhanced reply controls, feed personalization, and a revamped video player.

One of the key additions is the ability for users to add interest-based topic tags to their profiles. These tags, displayed below a user’s bio, allow visitors to see what topics a person frequently engages with. Tapping on a tag will lead to discussions related to that subject. Meta hopes this feature will encourage more follows by making it easier for users to connect over shared interests.

Threads is also updating how topics are tagged in posts. The platform will now suggest trending or relevant topics when composing a post, aiming to boost engagement and visibility. According to Meta’s internal data, posts with tagged topics generally receive more views than those without.

Another significant change is the expansion of reply and quote-post controls. Users can now limit these interactions to only their followers, adding another layer of control over conversations. This builds on the quote controls feature introduced in late 2024 and could be particularly relevant as Meta phases political content back into Threads. The platform had previously restricted civic discussions but is now reintegrating them in a “more personalized way.”

Additionally, Threads has introduced feed customization options, allowing users to set a specific custom feed as their default view upon opening the app. Lastly, a new video player update includes improved playback controls and a pinned progress bar for easier navigation. All of this majorly overhauls the user experience, bringing it closer in line with other social media platforms and enabling users to both create and consume content in a more personalised way.
