Meta’s Threads platform is making a notable shift this week, officially transitioning from “threads.net” to “threads.com” after acquiring the domain last September. Alongside the domain change, Threads is also introducing several new updates aimed at enhancing the desktop experience.
Threads’ desktop interface, which already offers a multi-column view reminiscent of TweetDeck, will now allow users to choose a more streamlined layout. The updated display mirrors the mobile app’s experience, positioning topic feeds along the top of the main feed while retaining the option to add extra columns for tracking multiple streams.
Additional improvements include easier access to liked and saved posts via the main menu and a new in-stream post creation feature, enabled by tapping a “+” button in the lower corner. Users will also be able to copy a Threads post as an image, making it simpler to share content across Instagram and other platforms while maintaining creator attribution.
Threads is also testing new discovery tools that aim to make it easier for users to connect with profiles they follow on other platforms, starting with X (formerly Twitter). The platform has begun trialing an option for users to upload their X following list to help find familiar accounts on Threads. While the feature depends on manual uploads and user data matching, it could assist users in rebuilding their social networks within the app – removing one of the biggest pain points of switching to an entirely new platform.
Threads continues to gain momentum, approaching 500 million users and positioning itself as a serious competitor in the social media landscape, though it still trails X’s reported 600 million users.
