As frustration with local dating options grows, a new study reveals that many British singles are reigniting their search for love while travelling abroad. According to a recent survey of 2,000 solo travellers conducted by OnePoll – as reported on by The Sun – two-thirds of respondents have reactivated previously unused dating apps during international trips, aiming to spark connections in new destinations.
The findings suggest that dating burnout at home is leading many to explore romantic opportunities elsewhere. A significant portion of those surveyed – one in five – admitted to choosing travel destinations with dating prospects in mind, and around a third expressed interest in meeting and dating locals while abroad. For some, these encounters offered more than just romance: one-fifth said dating a local deepened their cultural understanding.
Still, international dating comes with unique challenges. Four in ten respondents reported running into translation-related mishaps, from awkward phrases to unintended insults. To mitigate this, a quarter of travellers have turned to language-learning apps to improve communication. However, practical issues persist – such as roaming charges – with nearly one in ten admitting to ghosting a potential match due to running out of data.
Mobile provider iD Mobile, which commissioned the research, highlights how connectivity costs remain a barrier. About 30% of respondents said they were surprised by high roaming fees, with some receiving bills over £150.
To support travellers looking for love, iD Mobile has teamed up with TV presenter and relationship expert Anna Richardson, offering guidance on dating abroad. Her advice emphasises cultural awareness, communication, and staying connected without breaking the bank. The study highlights a growing trend: young Brits are moving beyond borders in their search for connection – blending romance with travel in increasingly intentional ways.
