Automattic has unveiled a revamped version of Beeper, its all-in-one messaging app acquired in April 2024, combining the capabilities of the previously integrated Texts.com service. The update introduces an on-device mode, allowing most data – messages, credentials, and account connections – to be processed entirely on users’ devices rather than through Beeper’s cloud. This comes not long after the app itself was show to have a reworked design, teased back in February.
This shift enhances privacy with end-to-end encryption maintained locally, which Automattic says preserves security equivalent to standalone official apps. The change also promises performance gains, with improvements in speed and battery efficiency.
In addition to privacy upgrades, Beeper is rolling out new premium subscription plans. The “Beeper Plus” tier, priced at $9.99/month, enables support for up to 10 messaging services, along with features like message scheduling, reminders, incognito mode, and AI-powered transcription. Meanwhile, “Beeper Plus Plus,” starting at $49.99/month, caters to power users and professionals by offering unlimited accounts and broader multi-service integrations.
Owned by Automattic – also behind WordPress.com – Beeper now supports a broad range of platforms, including WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram, Slack, Signal, Discord, and X. On macOS, it also recently reintroduced iMessage support, which had been removed in earlier versions prior to being acquired.
The relaunch positions Beeper as a more secure and feature-rich alternative for managing cross-platform messaging. With Automated on-device encryption and additional workflow tools, the app aims to address user concerns around privacy while offering enhanced utility for both consumers and professionals.
