LinkedIn Reverses Algorithm Changes, Revises Hashtag Value

LinkedIn has confirmed it has reversed a recent algorithm update that inadvertently pushed older posts into users’ feeds, sparking widespread complaints. The company acknowledged that the change was part of a test aimed at balancing relevant versus recent content but ultimately disrupted the platform’s core timeline experience. According to LinkedIn’s Bhairavi Jhaveri, “Your feed may have looked slightly different in the last few weeks, and you would have seen many more ‘older posts’ than you would have liked.”

LinkedIn has since returned its feed to its previous state, though Jhaveri’s original announcement has been removed, leaving some ambiguity about future adjustments. Alongside this update, LinkedIn has clarified its current stance on hashtags. Once strongly promoted after being reintroduced in 2018, hashtags now play a diminished role in content discovery on the platform. LinkedIn’s improved text detection and topic-matching algorithms largely render hashtags unnecessary for reach, though they still provide some value for users searching specific topics or trends.

Rishi Jobanputra, LinkedIn’s product chief, note, “Since hashtags were introduced over a decade ago, I’d say our feed algorithm has really evolved, and we’re just doing a better job at what content is about and trying to match it to the right audiences.”

Separately, LinkedIn CEO Ryan Roslansky revealed in an interview with Semafor that the company is exploring new AI-powered features, including a voice-enabled AI resume coach and a tool designed to help executives prepare for interviews. However, Roslansky acknowledged that AI-generated posts have seen limited success on the platform, as authenticity remains a key expectation among professional users. As Roslansky stated, users generating overly polished AI content often “get called out” for lacking authenticity in a professional setting.
