Reddit Introduces New Privacy Controls for User Profiles

Reddit has rolled out a new feature aimed at giving users greater control over how their content appears on their public profiles. The update introduces a “Content and Activity” setting that allows users to manage which posts and comments from various subreddits are visible to others.

Historically, all user contributions on Reddit have been publicly viewable through their profile, unless removed or deleted. With the latest update, users can now choose to hide all their posts and comments from their profile or selectively display content from specific communities. This includes contributions made directly on their profile page.

These changes are accessible through a new “Curate your profile” section. In addition to post visibility settings, users can toggle options for displaying NSFW content and follower counts. While these new tools don’t make Reddit fully private—posts remain visible in communities and moderators retain some access—they do offer users more flexibility in how their activity is presented.

The move comes as Reddit adjusts its platform in the wake of its IPO, with a growing emphasis on user engagement and advertising. Previously, many users created alternate or “throwaway” accounts to post sensitive content. With more granular privacy tools, Reddit may encourage users to engage more openly from a single account.

However, there are limitations. Content visibility is managed on a per-community basis, not at the individual post or comment level. Additionally, moderators can still view a user’s recent public activity for up to 28 days, and interactions on profile posts may temporarily expose full posting histories. Alongside this update, Reddit has refreshed its activity summaries, offering overviews that include metrics like Karma, account age, and active communities – tailored to reflect the new content visibility settings.
