Meta’s microblogging platform Threads has surpassed 350 million monthly active users, according to CEO Mark Zuckerberg during the company’s Q1 2025 earnings call. The milestone marks a 30 million user increase since the previous quarter, up from 320 million, reflecting a notable acceleration in the app’s adoption rate. By comparison, Threads gained 20 million users in the fourth quarter of 2024.
This growth trajectory strengthens Threads’ position within the competitive microblogging landscape, where it continues to serve as Meta’s primary response to X (formerly Twitter). X, under CEO Linda Yaccarino, currently maintains a lead with over 600 million monthly active users, but Threads’ rising numbers indicate a strong foothold, particularly among users seeking alternatives.
Zuckerberg highlighted during the earnings call that Threads “continues to be on track to become our next major social app,” underscoring Meta’s long-term ambitions for the platform. He also pointed to a 35% increase in time spent on Threads, attributing the improvement to recent enhancements in the app’s recommendation systems — a likely factor in retaining and engaging its growing user base.
Though still smaller than Meta’s flagship platforms — including Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp — Threads contributes to the company’s vast digital ecosystem. Altogether, Meta reported that over 3.4 billion people interact with at least one of its services each day.
Threads’ quarterly gain of 30 million users also puts it in close range of newer competitors. Decentralized platform Bluesky, for example, currently sits at around 35 million users total. While still trailing far behind X in scale, Threads’ momentum suggests it is becoming an increasingly significant player in the evolving social media landscape.
