X (formerly Twitter) appears to be moving forward with a long-anticipated plan to monetize unused usernames on its platform. Recent updates to the platform’s web application indicate the company is preparing to launch a “handle inquiry” system that will allow Verified Organizations to bid on dormant handles — with starting prices set at $10,000.
The discovery was made by reverse engineer Nima Owji, who noted changes to the backend of X’s web app this week. While the public-facing site is not yet live, an FAQ embedded in the application outlines how organizations can initiate purchase requests, how long transfers may take, and what buyers can expect from the process. The system will rely on an automated support bot to guide inquiries, and responses will reportedly be provided within three business days.
This feature is limited to Verified Organizations, which already pay a $1,000 monthly fee for enhanced platform access. According to the uncovered FAQ, X may offer discounts for bulk purchases depending on the quantity and total value of the transactions.
The idea of monetizing handles is not new under Elon Musk’s leadership. In early 2023, reports emerged that the company was considering auctions for high-value usernames. Later that year, X was reportedly approaching potential buyers informally, though no official announcement was made. Musk has also previously expressed interest in clearing inactive accounts to free up sought-after usernames. If rolled out, the update could provide a much-needed stream of extra revenue, and complements X’s policy of eventually deactivating inactive accounts nicely.
