Threads API Unveils Major Upgrades for Third‑Party Tools and Creators

Meta has rolled out a substantial update to the Threads API, enhancing functionality for external developers and social media management platforms. Originally launched in June 2024 to support basic scheduling and content retrieval, the API now offers a suite of advanced features that align Threads with broader content needs across digital marketing and operations.

The latest version enables location tagging in posts, support for polls (creation and result retrieval), and streamlined text‑only publishing via an auto_publish_text parameter. Developers can now also delete posts programmatically, fetch public profiles and posts, and use topic tags to build more discoverable content experiences. Search capabilities have been greatly expanded: the API now supports keyword queries within specified date ranges, topic‑based filtering, GIF media attachments, link click tracking, and options to restrict replies to followers only.

A significant addition is real‑time webhook support, which notifies developers of mentions or post engagements in live time – enabling dynamic responses and better campaign tracking. These enhancements arrive as Threads’ user base pushes past 350 million monthly active users, making it more than large enough for these kind of updates. At this size, and with such a large company at the helm, it’s likely that Threads may start to see the same level of user-created tools and alternate clients as Twitter (now X) did back in the days of TweetDeck and other similar platforms..
