Meta is rapidly enhancing the direct messaging capabilities of Threads, its Twitter-like app, by introducing several new features aimed at improving user interaction. After initial reluctance to add messaging to Threads, Meta is now responding to user demand by rolling out options such as GIF and sticker sharing alongside images, which were introduced just last week.
App researcher Alessandro Paluzzi revealed that upcoming updates will also include the ability to edit messages, as well as “Unsend” and delete options, allowing users greater control over their conversations. Additionally, group chat functionality is in development, which will bring Threads closer to matching the messaging versatility found in other Meta platforms like Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram Direct.
This expansion of messaging features is significant given Meta’s previous hesitation to add another DM system, likely due to regulatory pressures. Meta has been under scrutiny by the FTC, which is pushing for the divestiture of Instagram and WhatsApp amid concerns over monopolistic practices. To address these challenges, Meta has been working on integrating its messaging apps to allow interoperability, with the long-term goal of creating a unified inbox across Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram.
By adding these features, Threads is becoming a more functional social platform with enhanced connectivity options. While there is no confirmed release date for the new DM features, they are expected to arrive soon, especially given Threads’ fairly rapid rate of updates and tweaks.
