Elon Musk’s social platform X is experiencing a significant decline in Android app installs, which is impacting subscription revenue, according to new data from app intelligence provider Appfigures. While iOS downloads grew by 15% in July 2025, Google Play installs fell sharply by 44% year-over-year worldwide.
Overall, X’s total mobile downloads decreased by 26% year-over-year in July, improving slightly from June’s 35% decline. The drop has been attributed primarily to persistent issues with the Android app, which has long been criticized for bugs and crashes.
X’s head of product, Nikita Bier, who previously worked on ****-focused apps such as Gas and TBH, has indicated that the company is taking steps to address Android’s challenges. Bier announced that X is recruiting for its “Android Dream Team” to overhaul the platform’s Android experience, while simultaneously highlighting the iOS app’s recent record week for installs.
It remains unclear where displaced Android users are turning. Competitor Bluesky recorded just 119,000 Google Play downloads in July, suggesting it is not capturing a significant share of the market. Meanwhile, Meta’s Threads app has been closing the gap in daily mobile users, potentially attracting some Android users from X.
The decline in Android installs is also affecting X’s subscription revenue. In July, the platform earned $16.9 million in net subscription revenue, down from $18.8 million in March 2025, although slightly higher than June’s $16.8 million. Advertising continues to account for the bulk of X’s overall revenue, but the slump in Android performance, combined with the launch of Grok’s stand-alone app, is likely drawing away paying customers who previously subscribed to X primarily for AI features.
