Snapchat is introducing a new feature called “Home Safe,” designed to help users inform friends and family when they’ve arrived home safely after an outing. Announced on Thursday, the update expands the functionality of Snap Map by adding a tool for real-time safety check-ins.
To activate the feature, users must first set a home location by tapping their Bitmoji on the Snap Map, selecting “My Home,” and saving their address. When returning from a trip or event, users can open a chat, tap the Map icon, and select the “Home Safe” button. Once they reach their destination, a notification is automatically sent within the chat, letting the selected contact know they’ve arrived safely.
The feature is opt-in and restricted to friends who already have access to your location through Snap Map. As location sharing is off by default on Snapchat, no alerts are sent unless the user has explicitly chosen to share their location.
Snapchat described the feature as offering “peace of mind” in everyday scenarios such as leaving a concert or heading home after a night out. The move reflects a broader trend of social apps integrating more personal safety features amid growing concerns around digital well-being and real-world security.
The rollout of “Home Safe” follows Snapchat’s May announcement that Snap Map now boasts over 400 million monthly active users. Since its debut in 2017, Snap Map has evolved from a simple location tracker to a discovery tool highlighting events, local venues, and friends’ activity.
