Neptune, a new U.S.-based social media platform, has entered beta testing with the goal of offering an alternative to mainstream apps like TikTok and Instagram. Founded by talent director Ashley Darling, Neptune is designed around creator control, transparency, and minimizing reliance on algorithmic amplification and engagement metrics.
The app is currently in limited release, with around 970 beta testers and over 400,000 users on the waitlist. A full public launch has been delayed due to technical fixes, but the team says it is aiming to deliver a stable and secure version when ready.
Neptune’s main distinguishing feature is a customizable algorithm. Users can manually adjust feed preferences using sliders that prioritize followed accounts, trending hashtags, or new creators. A toggle lets users switch between a default algorithm and their own settings, and an AI filter allows for the removal of AI-generated content from feeds.
Unlike most platforms, Neptune does not display ads and does not require users to show likes or follower counts. These metrics can be made private through a feature called “Ghost Metrics.” The app also includes monetization tools such as tipping, subscriptions, and livestreams.
The platform supports both short and long-form video content and includes options to highlight preferred creators via a “Top 6” profile feature. Neptune is positioning itself as a tool for independent creators, but it remains in beta with limited functionality and no confirmed launch date – so far, its future may heavily depend on how its beta test users receive its fairly unique approach to the social media experience.
