Bluesky Enhances User Control with Advanced Notification Features

Bluesky has introduced a significant update to its notification system, offering users enhanced control over their activity alerts. The new features, rolled out on July 7, 2025, allow users to customize notifications based on specific accounts and activities, aligning the platform more closely with established social media norms.

One of the standout additions is the ability to receive notifications from individual accounts. By selecting the bell icon on a user’s profile, followers can opt to be alerted whenever that account posts new content, including replies. This functionality mirrors features found on platforms like X and Threads, facilitating real-time updates for users interested in specific content creators or topics.

In addition to account-specific alerts, Bluesky has expanded its notification categories. Users can now fine-tune their preferences for various activities, including likes, reposts, follows, and mentions. Notifications can be filtered to apply to everyone, only followed users, or disabled entirely. This granular control aims to reduce notification overload and enhance user experience.

The previous “priority notifications” feature, which limited alerts to accounts users follow, has been integrated into this new system. Users who had enabled this setting will continue to receive notifications from followed accounts by default.

These updates position Bluesky as a more customizable alternative to its competitors, addressing user demand for personalized social media experiences. As the platform continues to evolve, it aims to balance user control with the convenience of algorithm-driven content delivery.
